This one is for my husband, Peter. It wouldn't be Christmas around here with out some of the Greek tradition from the old world. My husband was born in the United States, but his entire family is from Sparta, Greece. It is a beautiful country and I highly recommend going if you ever have the opportunity.
When I was first married I spent a month in Greece with my husband's aunt and family. I learned how to cook many of the wonderful Greek dishes. One of which was this one.
GREEK NUT CAKE
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. milk
2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
3 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
2 c. walnuts
*Cream butter until fluffy.
*Beat in sugar, stir in eggs and milk, blend thoroughly.
*Sift flour and powdered cinnamon, salt and cloves.
*Slowly blend flour into cream mixture, stir in nuts; blend.
*Pour into greased tube pan.
*Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until done.
HARD SAUCE:
8 tbsp. (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 c. confectioners' sugar
3 tbsp. dark rum
*Melt butter over med-low heat
*Whisk in confectioner's sugar
*Blend in rum
Serve warm over cake
Sprinkle with powdered sugar or drizzle hard sauce on top and let run over the sides of the cake and enjoy!

This cake looks so beautiful, and sounds delicious -- especially the hard sauce! :) I'm definitely going to have to try this!
ReplyDeleteOh YUMMY! My great-aunt's husband was Greek and my mother raves about the cooking. She's been searching for years for some silly soup recipe - makes me crazy.
ReplyDeleteI'll make these for her and hopefully she'll be pleased.
Susann, My husband is looking for a soup recipe too. He doen't know the name of it, but it had meat balls in it? What kind is your mother looking for? Maybe together we can search it out for them.
